1913 BARNES MANSION

The Zipper

Custom made cabinets helped bring one of Portland’s most famous historic homes back to life.

Custom made cabinets allowed the remodel of the kitchen in the famed Barnes mansion to be as rich and stunning as the rest of the grand Colonial Revival home. Built in 1913 as the main hub of a family compound devised by Frank Barnes, the property was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983. The home had fallen into disrepair—it even made an appearance as the haunted house on Klickitat Street in the Ramona Quimby series by beloved Portland author, Beverly Cleary.

But the home is rundown and haunted no more! The kitchen needed serious attention, receiving an overhaul that returned it to the level of glory befitting its original grandeur. The lowers were created using mahogany, matching original millwork seen in other areas of the home. All made with face frame construction, we see part overlay install on the drawers and full inset with mortised hinges at the door fronts. The white uppers are in keeping with the extensive use of molding and window casing throughout, helping this kitchen appear light and bright even as it is richly detailed.

Standout features are seen throughout. A beautifully ornate range hood conceals a commercial-grade hood while managing to appear original to the home. A small working island cleverly houses an electrical outlet, with the wiring run through a chase concealed in one of the farmhouse-style table legs. A butcher block top completes the effect. At the uppers and at the hutch, glass-front cabinet doors display china, glassware, and treasured objets while harmonizing with the transom lites seen over the doorways. The overall effect of these custom made cabinets is stately but homey, historic with an emphasis on function, and just plain beautiful.

Fun fact! This kitchen was featured in the Nicolas Cage film, Pig.
